Phase 2 of the exercise, which began on February 21, highlights the projection of strength and power, as well as the planning and management capacity of the French armies.

At the heart of the ORION 2023 exercise are the E-3F AWACS of the 36th Avord Airborne Command and Conduct Wing (36th EC2A). AWACS are real tools for conducting air operations and have the function of detecting and controlling all aircraft in a theatre of operation. Thanks to their high position and radar, AWACS are able to see all enemy activities. With this technical capability, the specialists on board the aircraft can provide threat notice to the chain of command, giving it a long lead over the opponent.

As part of ORION's realistic and demanding scenario, the E-3F AWACS are a major asset in the system implemented by the Air and Space Force. Their ability to detect and control enemy movements is essential to acquire air superiority in a high-intensity conflict.

Exercise ORION 2023 is an opportunity for French forces to train in joint and multinationals, taking into account the different environments and fields of conflict (cyber, space, influence, informational struggle). The objective is to prepare armies to face complex and unforeseen situations, using the latest defense technologies and techniques.

Out of exercise, the 36th EC2A continues its permanent Air safety posture missions and remains a key element for the French armies and their allies. AWACS play an essential role in air defense and the protection of national sovereignty.

Exercise ORION 2023 and the role of the E-3F AWACS of the 36th EC2A illustrate the preparation of the French armies for high-intensity conflict situations. The enemy motion detection and control capabilities of AWACS are essential to acquire aerial superiority and predict the opponent's movements.
